Creating our own cliches

Or, fings wot ain't monoliths.

I have noticed that I spent a sizeable portion of the last couple of weeks pointing out to various people that a range of topics are not, in fact, a mass of cookie-cutter identical experiences and stories. That the topics being discussed were made up of masses of individuals, each with wildly varying tales and perspectives. That they were not the same... not monoliths.

The list included, but was not limited to:

  • The sex industry (duh)

  • Homelessness

  • Indigenous AUstralia

How's this for a suggestion: From now on, unless something is specifically note worthy for the consistency of perspectives within it, or is an actual monolith rather than something made out of humans, we'll just presume it's non-monolithic in nature. You know, try discussing it without forcing the people we're actually talking about to conform to pre-existing boxes.

Bleh.
